The Horsehead Nebula, also known as Barnard 33, rises in silhouette against the bright emission nebula IC 434. Hubble’s close view reveals the intricate edge of this cold cloud of gas and dust in the constellation Orion.
Radiation from nearby hot stars erodes and sculpts the nebula, while a young star remains embedded near its upper edge. The familiar horse-like form is a chance alignment that has become one of astronomy’s most recognizable silhouettes.
