A Sky View of Earth from Suomi NPP presents our planet as a luminous world surrounded by darkness. Southern Africa and Madagascar rise above the deep blue Indian Ocean, while sweeping cloud formations and Tropical Cyclone Joalane reveal the movement and scale of Earth’s atmosphere.
This natural-color composite was assembled from data collected during six orbits of the Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership spacecraft on April 9, 2015. Its Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite captured red, green, and blue wavelength data that NASA combined into this detailed view. The virtual perspective looks down from approximately 8,300 kilometers above a point at 50 degrees south latitude and 40 degrees east longitude.
Produced from the full-resolution 15,000 × 15,000 source image, every available size preserves the original square composition without cropping and substantially exceeds Space Art Studio’s 300-PPI quality standard.
