Description
The Little Dumbbell Nebula, cataloged as Messier 76, is a planetary nebula formed as a dying Sun-like star cast its outer layers into space. Hubble reveals two bright lobes surrounded by arcs and knots of expanding gas.
The central white dwarf continues to energize this material with ultraviolet radiation, producing the nebula’s vivid colors and fine structure.
