Description
The Penguin and the Egg are two interacting galaxies cataloged together as Arp 142. The distorted spiral galaxy NGC 2936 forms the Penguin, while compact elliptical NGC 2937 shines beside it as the Egg.
Webb’s combined NIRCam and MIRI view traces stars, gas, and dust transformed by their gravitational encounter. Thousands of more distant galaxies fill the dark background beyond the pair.
