Description
The Sombrero Galaxy, also known as Messier 104, is seen nearly edge-on from Earth. Hubble’s mosaic highlights its bright central bulge, broad halo of stars, and the dark dust lane that creates the galaxy’s distinctive brim-like silhouette.
Millions of old stars give the central region a warm glow, while the surrounding disk contains cooler gas and dust. The galaxy’s strong horizontal form makes this one of Hubble’s most immediately recognizable portraits.
