Pale Blue Dot Revisited (2020)

Voyager 1

Embrace the profound and humbling view of Earth with our exhibition-quality print of the Pale Blue Dot, captured by NASA’s Voyager 1 spacecraft. This iconic image, taken from a record distance of about 3.7 billion miles away from Earth, shows our planet as a tiny, fragile dot suspended in the vastness of space.

Story Behind the Pale Blue Dot:

The Pale Blue Dot image was taken on February 14, 1990, by Voyager 1 at the request of the famed astronomer Carl Sagan. As the spacecraft was leaving our solar system, it turned its camera back towards Earth to capture this historic photograph. In the image, Earth appears as a mere speck, less than a pixel in size, bathed in a ray of sunlight.

Carl Sagan eloquently reflected on this image in his book “Pale Blue Dot: A Vision of the Human Future in Space,” emphasizing the insignificance and fragility of our planet in the vast cosmic arena. This image serves as a powerful reminder of the unity of humanity, the need to care for our planet, and the preciousness of life on Earth.

The Voyager 1 spacecraft, launched in 1977, continues to journey through interstellar space, carrying with it the Golden Record—a message for any potential extraterrestrial life that might encounter it. The Pale Blue Dot remains one of the most iconic and thought-provoking images ever captured, symbolizing our place in the universe.

In 2020, for the 30th anniversary of the iconic image, a new version was created called “Pale Blue Dot Revisited,” processed by JPL engineer and image processing enthusiast Kevin M. Gill with input from two of the image’s original planners, Candy Hansen and William Kosmann. The updated version used modern software and techniques to revisit the well-known Voyager view, while attempting to respect the original data and intent of those who planned the images.
